Clubs and Hobbies to help me on my way

Story Competition's Over

I competed in a short story contest over the summer for Polar Expressions. I ended up finishing in the top 1/3 about 1000 people entered, which meant I was published in an anthology with the others. The story had to be 750 words or less about any topic. We weren't allowed to publish anything about our story until the competition was over. I didn't end up winning a prize, but it's always nice to be published. Yes, I bought a bunch of books for people for Christmas.

Here's the story.

Ronald Mc Donald House Northern Alberta

Growing up we were very lucky that we didn't have to stay at Ronald Mc Donald House when my brother was ill. We had enough support from friends and family and his treatments were available in Calgary which was only 2.5 hours driving from where we lived. Most times his treatments were only for the day, so my parents could drive back and forth with us in tow.

Not everyone is so lucky and to give back I've decided to donate my time and skills to Ronald Mc Donald House in Edmonton. I feel kind of silly that I lived in Edmonton for over a year and didn't think to volunteer there until I decided to move back to Calgary.

Goddess Awakening Weekend Retreat!

One of the first groups I got involved in when I moved to Edmonton was the Goddess Lair. It's actually the group responsible for most of friends here. Their 2nd Annual Retreat is coming May 20-22 at the Alberta 4H center. I'll be going this year as a participant and speaker, though I haven't been told what I'll speak about just yet lol. I have a lot of confidence that this event will be well worth the money. I'd love for my mom and sister to be part of it, because the healing will be profound.

For the last 9 months I've experienced Lorene's boundless energy in her mission to help people help others, not through a specific modality, but through a collective group who have come forward to lend their knowledge to affect a larger group of people.

OMG Things came together!

I had such a great day on Thursday. I rode really well, didn't freak out when I got lost on a double black (remember I ride blues), had fun in some powder and chatted with random people. This whole trusting in life's process seems to work out really well. I need to keep doing it. Like I said though it's rough looking at the bank balance, but this too shall pass.

My feet sort of hurt, but I've been working on stretching my back, which has helped the feet and some of my other activities. I would like to start doing some stuff in the terrain park next year, especially when I move back to Calgary.

Never give a sword to a man who can't dance

Confucius was a smart guy. Dancing takes discipline, poise, stamina and a calm, clear frame of mind. Makes sense that if you lack these traits battle might be a bit tough. Traditionally, numerous cultures all over the world have had the same attitude towards dancing as training for war. Like many things in life at first glance it doesn't seem to make sense until you try some of the dances. In India if someone mentions a soldier, Sikhs, come to mind and if you've ever seen a bungra performance you'd understand.

Thursday's Therapy: Snowboarding at Norquay

Story of my life... "You just need that little piece to click" Yeah, so the break through I wanted to have, I didn't get, but that's not a bad thing... I think. I got more practice in not being terrified and more importantly hung out with someone on my level, not of snowboarding, but in life. I admire people with no plans. His story was much like mine. Had a great plan that fell through so now just take what comes to see where it leads you.

The day started out poorly as I was late getting up so missed catching a ride with everyone, but made it to the hill.

Yes More on the Snowboard... Finding the Calm

What exactly is the Calm? Well it's the space that I live in all the time except when I talk to my mom, drive and apparently when I ride. Using Body Talk terms you can enter a higher state when the left and right side of your brain work together. In this state you can access the "innate wisdom" or whatever term you'd like to use. In yoga we use the term "higher self". Amazing things are possible in this state. I can treat people where ever they are anywhere in the world while having a full conversation with a client lying on the table.

More snowboarding therapy

Why so much about snowboarding all of sudden? A couple reasons I'm completely stoked with the upcoming trips I've signed up for, but in all honesty can't afford. Cruising around the web I've found more cool things that will require a) selling LOTS of lotion b) back to a real job, though  I have other projects to explore. My iphone is reporting lots of snow this week. I'll be riding at Banff Norquay on Thursday. My friends are going to Kicking Horse, but I can't go, because I need to be in E-town to prep for a presentation.

The deeper meaning behind snowboarding injuries

I first came up with this idea for Pole Dancing as the injuries are generally the same for everyone. If you fall you'll more than likely break your neck. Invert too soon wreck your shoulders, too many leg holds calves are sore etc. Since I have such a hard time dancing because of the emotional release I wanted to use Chinese medicine/Body Talk to look at the psychology/consciousness behind the muscles.

Snowboarding is no different and frankly busting my butt on the hill has improved my strength for dancing and exacerbated some postural problems mostly with my neck stretched at funny angles though my tummy muscles are much stronger.

Snowboarding therapy

For some odd and unknown reason I've fully embraced the ridiculously expensive sport of snowboarding. For a girl who had a steady pay cheque, married to an engineer who happened to get free passes, didn't seem so bad, but now having to pay nearly full price and then pay for lessons on top seems crazy to someone with NO income. Well, okay I have some income and savings, but I can hear my parents and probably my ex bf too saying some nasty things about my choices.

I have all the equipment which is nice and through the club I belong to found some great deals on tuning.
